Roll Call: B2B? Present!
Reflection on the Attendance Challenge in by Central Zone Community Liaison Willie Patterson.
As a result of parental engagement and through the indigenous wisdom of parents, B2B has changed the culture of attendance. The parents wanted to see more children off the streets during school hours. The community wanted to see how through collaboration with local partners they could increase attendance in the Central Zone. B2B then reached out to the Kentwood Fun Spot Skating Rink to launch the Central Zone Attendance Challenge that gives children with perfect attendance each month a free skating pass to the venue.
While the challenge offers individual recognition there is also a competitive aspect to the challenge. The four schools in the Central Zone (G.R. Ford, MLK, Campau & SE Student Success Center) are also competing for school wide attendance supremacy; each semester the school with the largest percent in increase of attendance from last year will receive a school-wide skating party!
The success of the program is already evident; the month of September has already shown tremendous gains in attendance and success by awarding over 300 students certificates and skating passes for perfect attendance! Assemblies to recognize those students are being planned and there is no doubt that October will be twice as successful. Thanks to the Principals in the Central Zone for allowing B2B to engage parents and work alongside of GRPS to create an environment where children want to be: “In School-Where the Cool Kids Are!”
