Family Fun Night in the Central Zone

Family Fun Night in the Central Zone

Posted: 06-10-2011

On the night of May 27th, the Believe 2 Become Male Involvement, Community Center and Youth Action Planning teams collaborated for the kick-off of the Believe 2 Become Integrative Planning Phase. The three Action Teams, rising out of the Central Zone planning process, all called for a Family Night as their short-term goal, so with the help of resident leaders and volunteers, the Siedman Boys & Girls Club, and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, the Believe 2 Become initiative kicked into high gear by hosting its first annual Family Fun Night and Wii tournament from 5pm-8pm at the Siedman Boys & Girls Club. Over 30 parents and approximately 65 children were in attendance; eager to see their ideas come to life. The night consisted of a Wii bowling tournament, arts and crafts, board games and raffle prize drawings.

The Family Fun Night also served as the launch event for the Believe 2 Become Parent/Child Essay Contest and the Reading Rewards programs taking place this summer.  One resident was so excited about the essay contest, she started composing her essay right there!

As the night drew to a close, the Wii bowling tournament was in its tenth frame and the scores were close.  After a nail-biting finish, the Martin family, long-time supporters of the Believe 2 Become initiative, took home the crown of champions and were presented with day passes to the recently constructed Ray & Joan Kroc Center. The grand prize of the night was a Wii console, which was won by the Quinn family, a single mother with two boys, ages nine and eleven. The brothers were very excited and couldn’t wait to get home and host their own bowling tournament!

As Staci, Montel and Victor, LINC’s Believe 2 Become Natural Helpers for Central, followed up with participants after the event, the majority wanted to know “when are we doing this again?” The good news is there are still plenty of ways to get involved! Submissions for the Parent/Child Essay Contest are open until June 30. Contact Staci at 616.819.0308 to find out how you can win $1,000.  Enrollment for the Reading Rewards program, where kids can earn money for reading books this summer, will be open from June 13-17. Contact Montel at 616.819.0287 to sign up!

The Neighborhood Engagement team would like to thank all of the participants, residents and stakeholders for dedicating their time and energy to this movement. It is such an awesome experience to see this work come to life. We believe! We become!
